Icons

The following icons are safe to use when writing Matillion documentation.

Trigram

Enclose in double asterisks so that it is bold.

The trigram is used by many websites on either the left or right of the screen as a button that represents the main navigation menu. Due to its resemblance to a hamburger, the trigram is sometimes alternately known as the hamburger menu or might otherwise be the three line menu or some other such literal designation. Where possible, use the trigram icon instead of a sentence that spends too much time trying to explain what the icon looks like.

If you do need to describe it, just say "hamburger menu".

Do not use the trigram icon if the button you're describing does not look like a trigram. For example, if you're referring to a candybox menu (9-dot square; also known as bento) or a kebab menu (3 vertical dots).

Cog/gear/settings

    ⚙️

Enclose in double asterisks so that it is bold.

This icon is a Unicode-approved emoji for a gear or cog—which are used interchangeably to denote a button that takes you to some "settings" dialog. Some websites will even just call it the "settings" button or icon. Use the icon where possible, and to avoid any confusion, use "cog" and not "gear" if you do need to write a descriptor.
