Tech note - Snowflake to block single-factor password authentication
Removal of Snowflake single-factor password authentication
On December 1st, 2024, Snowflake announced plans to block single-factor password authentication by November 2025.
Matillion will act in alignment with Snowflake to ensure that single-factor password authentication to Snowflake is removed in future releases of Matillion ETL.
Key pair authentication
Matillion introduced support for Snowflake key pair authentication in version 1.40 on August 20th, 2019.
Therefore, as long as you're running version 1.40 or later, you can switch your Snowflake project and environment authentication mechanisms from a password to a private key. We advise all customers perform this action as soon as possible.
For guidance on updating your projects and environments, read the section entitled "Snowflake connection" in our project and environment documentation:
If you haven't set up Snowflake key pair authentication yet, read Snowflake's documentation to learn more about key pair authentication: Key-pair authentication and key-pair rotation.
Upgrade your Matillion ETL instance
If you're running version 1.39 or older, we urge you to upgrade to one of our supported releases to receive our latest features, bug fixes, and security enhancements.
Warning
If you're running Matillion ETL for Snowflake on version 1.39 or older, we anticipate that your instances will stop working once Snowflake blocks single-factor password authentication in November 2025.
